The devastating effects of tuberculosis within the livestock industry is unfortunately too well known. Until now, there has not been any form of significant protection against the disease, with specific reference to vaccination. However, the Animal Plant and Health Agency have now announced the world’s first on farm trial for the BCG vaccine and DIVA skin test. The trial is taking place on a cattle farm located in Hertfordshire with high hopes of success. A successful trial will mean we are one step closer to mass vaccination of cattle against bTB, reducing the number of slaughtered animals, increasing animal welfare and financial viability.
