Crops and harvests are repeatedly lost due to unexpected and dramatic changes in weather, reducing availability of food for the nation. Droughts cause devastating affects to crops across the world. With reduced access to water, harvests can be lost, resulting in significant financial and social strains on the economy. UK scientists have recently engineered beans that may be able to conserve water use, using up to 40% less water, allowing them to maintain growth under severe drought conditions.
