Blue Flag Farming Scheme

Dairy farmers in West Wales are pioneering a new ‘Blue Flag Farming Scheme’ which will follow a similar design to the ‘Blue Flag’ awarded to beaches, marinas and sustainable tourism boating operators – in order to qualify for Blue flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained. There is currently a nutrient trading scheme involving milk suppliers to First Milk creamery in Haverfordwest. This project first came about as a result of negotiations between First Milk and Natural Resources Wales. It has been agreed upon that potentially polluting effluent from the cheese factory could be discharged directly into the Cleddau river on the premise that farmers would offset the environmental impact of the effluent through altering farming practices upstream.

The ‘Blue Flag Farming Scheme’ now aims to go a step further and will run alongside the current offsetting scheme. ‘Blue Flag’ includes measures that allow farmers to manage and record on-farm nitrogen use, as well as recording the environmental and input cost benefits from doing this. The scheme would provide a certification that rewards farmers, allowing them to showcase the ways they have been going above and beyond standard environmental regulations.
